Today, on Human Rights Day, which marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we reflect on Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote about how important it is to uphold the principles of human rights, because we believe giving our people the freedom to choose when, where and how they work is a human right:

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home — so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. […] Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

In November, the United Nations Global Impact released a new report: Human Rights: The Foundation of a Sustainable Business. The report showcases opportunities for businesses of all sizes and sectors to strengthen and scale up their efforts of human rights.“The Universal Declaration has particular relevance to the business community,” says Lise Kingo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “We have called on businesses to adopt a principles-based approach that places human rights at the centre of their strategy.” The report challenges companies to deepen their efforts to respect and support human rights throughout their supply chains and operations. It also highlights insight and initiatives by Global Compact Local Networks around the world, presents snapshots of current practices from companies participating in the UN Global Compact and showcases initiatives that are advancing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
