We, as individuals, are not just creative when we’re paid to be for our clients. We paint; we draw; we play instruments; we sing; we garden; we bake; we solve problems; we help friends with their small businesses; we sew; we are into fashion and interior design. We could go on…

Our passion at Emberson is to give our people the opportunity to continue to do these things they love and grow, by allowing them to strike a good work-life balance. That’s not to say we don’t work hard, we do. But we ensure we get to play hard too…or relax, whatever floats the boat.

But not everyone in agency life is so lucky it seems. According to Brand Recruitment’s Marketing Recruitment Review and Salary Survey 2018/19, marketing professionals rank those benefits which provide them with a better work-life balance very highly. The top desired benefit is 25 days’ holiday or more per year, with flexible working options in a close second place.

In fact, flexible working was ranked as extremely important or important by 89% of people who responded. So it is interesting to learn that only 42% of those who responded to the survey actually benefit from flexible working. And just 32% of all respondents actually work from home at least one day a week.

Crucially, just over half of marketers (54%) have admitted to considering new job opportunities in the next twelve months. The main reasons for wanting to leave their role included:

23% work/life balance

21% management/work environment

12% stress/wellbeing

If the agency you are working with is not looking after their people, subjecting them to command and control, not treating them as adults, and ‘leading’ under huge egos at the top, there is a much greater risk of them leaving and taking their knowledge with them.

We look after our people and they look after our clients. It’s as simple as that.

We spend our days understanding our clients’ customers’ worlds. Using our empathy and emotional intelligence to see what’s wrong in their world to make it right through our branding, marketing and leadgen skills. So why on earth wouldn’t we apply the same emotional intelligence within our own agency?

If people are not looked after they will leave. There is evidence to suggest experienced senior creatives are being tempted away to join shiny tech companies, but many also decide to go freelance, becoming a one-man band, to gain control over their lives and their work. For many, this seems the obvious answer to provide them with the freedom they crave, but it also comes with risks. Being a one-man band means they not only have to have those miniature cymbals attached to their knees and a harmonica strapped to their face, but they have to wear many hats too. Lots and lots of hats… They’ll be finance, compliance, legal, admin…oh yes, and a creative.

I was freelance for 8 years before joining the Emberson team. It can be exhausting covering all the bases yourself. There is so much to remember and do and organise outside of the paid client work. I remember it really was not fun yawning away at my desk at 11pm catching up with invoicing or following up on late payments, and absolutely desperate to go to bed.

With a flat structure and a distributed team allowing people to work from where they want to, we don’t provide bubblegum machines and ping pong tables to make up for driving people into work and into the ground. We think they’d prefer to be treated well, as adults, every day rather than papering over the cracks with those kinds of perks.
